BCAA’s – Everything You Need to Know

The lovely lot at Decibel Nutrition recently sent me some of their Sport Nutrition drinks to test out and give me honest view on, but it got me thinking that there are a lot of products that are used, that we possibly don’t know enough about. So first up is BCAA’s…

BCAAs are Branched Chain Amino Acids, made up of three specific amino acids – Leucine, Valine and Iso-Leucine.

BCAA’s are the foundations of proteins in the human body. They build and change the shape of them in order for our bodies to use them efficiently. However, there are 22 different types of Amino Acids and our bodies can only product 11 of these. The other 9 can be gained from eating/drinking protein sources which is where the BCAA’s supplements are a saviour for anyone trying to gain muscle as they can slow down the breakdown of muscle. Because they prevent muscle breakdown, it is best to take a form of BCAA’s during the first half of your workout.

Most protein drinks already contain BCAA’s and you should only need one portion per day, usually a 2:1:1 ratio (Decibel Nutrition provides 3:1:1), which is a great source if you struggle to get these from Whey protein or animal protein sources.
